When you think of pearl jewellery, what springs to mind? Chances are it's a shimmering, snow-white single-strand pearl necklace.
You're perhaps reminded of a relative's dazzling heirloom necklace that always captivated you as a child. It's highly likely that necklace was made up of Akoya pearls.
The purity of Akoya pearls, and their status as an affordable luxury, means they are often given as gifts for weddings, anniversaries or milestone birthdays.
Farmed in Japanese ocean waters since the early 20th Century, Akoya was the pearl that started it all.
All Pearl Gallery Akoya pearls are carefully selected for their beauty, consistency, and quality.
Our highest grade, Hanadama, are sent for external certification. There are only 2 laboratories in the world-both in Japan that test and certify Akoya Pearls for Hanadama appellation. All submitted pearls must meet the stringent grading criterion in order to receive the coveted Hanadama grading.
When you're choosing your Akoya pearl necklace or Akoya pearl earrings from our Hanadama collection, you'll know you're receiving fine jewellery that will be forever cherished.
All Pearl Gallery Akoya pearls have nothing less than a fair-grade lustre which is why they are so sought-after.
Akoya, specifically Hanadama grade Akoya, have the most brilliant shine and highest lustre of all cultured pearls. Hanadama roughly translates from the Japanese as “Flower of the harvest”.
Their subtle tones usually display whites and creams with delicate rose or ivory overtones, but can also available in Black and Grey shades; the greys can be natural colours but the black akoya are almost always treated to alter their tone.
Perfectly round with a glimmering finish.
Akoya pearls are available in a variety of sizes; anything from 2mm-11mm is possible, with 10-11mm being the rarest. Their petite size is due to their oyster, Pinctada fucata, being the smallest of the pearl-producers.
