Unlike other gems, pearls come from living creatures
While pearls are classified as gemstones, they are significantly different from all others (including sapphires, rubies, emeralds, etc.) since they are the only gems that come from living creatures. Gemstones of all other types are formed when magma cools under pressure in the Earth's crust.
